Community Hours
Ontario Students have a community hours obligation to meet prior to graduation wherein they must volunteer 40 hours of their time over the course of their high school experience. Click here to access the form.

MSIP
Bayside students have a class called MSIP (Multi Subject Instructional Period). We take fifteen minutes from every class in the day and use that time to create the MSIP class. This class allows students time to get help from other teachers or complete assignments for their classes and improve their learning skills and work habits. Attendance in MSIP is mandatory.

School Calendar
Bayside's school year is divided into two semesters. Semester One runs from September to the end of January. Semester Two runs from February to late June. The school day runs from 8:10 a.m. to 2:29 p.m. and is comprised of six 60-minute periods. Students take four classes and have one period for lunch and one Multi-Subject Instruction Period.

Announcements
These are read over the PA system to the entire school at the start of the day. Many announcements are shared on the sign at the entrance of Bayside. You can also see many announcements on social media like Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter. Additionally students should be regularly checking their student apps acccounts for important information.

Volunteers
Volunteers must complete the Vulnerable Sector Screening Request.

Attendance Process

Students are expected to take an active role in their learning by attending school regularly, attending all of their classes when at school, as well as being prepared for classes with appropriate materials and having homework and assignments completed.

Absence From School
Students who are absent from school will require family approval of the absence. Parents/Guardians can contact the school or send a note. Families are welcome to call the school 24 hours a day to report an absence in the attendance voice mailbox (613-966-2922, ext. 2123). Students over 18 may provide their own signed notes.

Acceptable reasons for absence and lateness include:

• family emergency
• dental, medical or legal appointments
• personal illness
• approved student activities and class excursions

Leaving School During The Day

• If students must leave the school during the day, they must report to the Attendance Secretary in the Main Office during their free time and sign out.
• A note or a phone call from a parent/guardian will be required before a student is allowed to sign out. Students are expected to remain in the office until a parent / guardian picks them up. Students who return to school the same day must sign in at the office upon return.
• If a student becomes ill during the day, they must report to the Main Office as soon as possible. Calls home are to be made by the Attendance Secretary. Ill students are to remain in the Main Office until the arranged ride arrives.

Late for Class
• Students who are late for their period one class without a valid reason will be automatically assigned one detention and will require an admit slip.
• Students who are late to classes during periods 2-6 are to report directly to class and the teacher will manage the lateness.

Detentions

Detentions

• SSMs will notify secondary students of detentions during morning classes.

•Administrators will inform Elementary teachers of student detentions.

•If you are late for class or miss a class without an approved parent/guardian absence, you are automatically assigned a detention and a call home will be made in the evening, by our automated attendance reporting system.

• If a detention has been assigned to you in error and needs to be corrected,it is your responsibility to have your parent/guardian call the front office to excuse your absence, or students must speak directly to the teacher involved to resolve the error.

•Detentions are served in the Detention Room during the first half of your lunch period. (Period 3 - 10:25 to 10:55 am and Period 4 - 11:25 to 11:55am)

•Students are required to serve assigned detentions (30 minutes) each day. Students who skip their detentions will be assigned an In-School Withdrawal.

•Eating, cell phones, earbuds or other electronic devices are not permitted during detention.

Reporting

At Bayside, we formally report students' progress eight times through the year – three times each semester plus an additional "In-Danger" report when necessary. The four different reports for each semester are:

Early Progress Report
A quick peek at progress after five weeks of class. Students carry this report home. The semester 1 Family/Teacher nterview Night date appears on this report and we encourage families to connect with their students teachers.

Second Reports
Second reports occur at approximately the nine-week point in each semester. Marks are then calculated, and reports are prepared and sent home with students. This occurs in mid-November (Semester One) and mid-April (Semester Two).

Credit Alert
Students with marks under approximately 60% after eleven weeks of class will receive an in-danger notice to remind them that consistent and on-going effort is required as well as careful preparation for final exams. These notices are mailed home.

Final Report
Final Reports are sent home in February (Semester One) and July (Semester Two).

Personal Technology at BSS

Bring Your Own Device: Chromebooks, Laptops and Tablets:

We encourage all students to bring their own device to engage in their learning, on a daily basis. This includes Chromebooks, laptops or tablets. All courses have Google or D2L Classrooms and students should ensure they can access the online platform in the event of an absence. Teachers will frequently post tasks, assignments,review materials, or communicate important information related to student learning or school events. Electronic devices can be safely stored in lockers when not in use. BSS has a limited number of Chromebooks available for students who do not have their own technology or require specific supports. We encourage all students to bring their own device to school on a daily basis.

Cell Phones and Smart Technology:

While cell phones and smart technology have become necessary components in our daily lives, the learning environment is different. Classroom teachers will determine if and when cell phones can be used in the classroom. At Bayside Secondary, cell phones will NOT BE PERMITTED to be a distraction in the learning environment. During class time, including MSIP, cell phones and earphones are to be turned off and away unless the teacher indicates otherwise.

At all times, the privacy, dignity and safety of others must be maintained through the appropriate use of electronic devices.

School Council

Bayside's School Council is composed primarily of parents but also includes school administrators, teachers and students. The mandate for School Council is to represent the parent community of the school by acting as an advisory board to the principal and by creating a line of communication between parents and the school. Please consult the school calendar to see when meetings will be held. All parents are welcome to attend.

Our typical agendas have been wide ranging and we value family input . Your input is taken seriously by the school administration and has led to actions on their part to implement suggestions.
